Jean Paul Lucas, known as J.P. by his friends, started his violin making career at the age of 13 in Farmington Hills, Michigan. When he was 18 he moved to Salt Lake City to study at the Violin Making School of America. He was made foreman of Peter Paul Prier Inc. in 1989, then graduated from the VMSA in 1990. In 1992 he moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where he built and sold many instruments. He returned to the VMSA in 1994 to instruct varnish and set up, in addition to running Peter Prier's workshop until 1997. He then went on his own to have more time for his building. In 2002 he was asked to be the honorary graduation examiner for the Violin Making School of America.
Currently J.P. eagerly continues his love of instrument making and restoration. To date, J.P. has made about 250 violins, violas and cellos of which many are placed in major orchestras, universities and with noble musicians throughout North America. He continues to combine his precision, cutting edge innovations, along with traditional old world techniques to advance the field and construct or restore the finest product he possibly can. Jean Paul Lucas currently lives in Salt Lake City with his wife Lisa and two sons, Justin and Alex.
